You've probably heard someone defend their messy habits by saying, A messy desk is a sign of a creative mind! While this may or may not be true, it sounds like an excuse to me. There's no reason that the most creative of people needs to be totally disorganized. Think about it: it might just as well be said, A messy desk is a sign of a lazy person, of a disorganized person, et al. I daresay that creative people who are messy might be even more creative when the visual they face has a good semblance of order, freeing them to think of more lofty ideas and be able to execute them more easily. When you learn how to control clutter, all you're doing is changing some long standing habits, in exchange for additional time to do what you want to do, by eliminating the need to search for everything.
Let's face it. When you control your clutter, you're really getting a handle on chaos, which is what the out of control clutter situation can bring to your mind. Here we've got a few tips on how to control clutter, permanently.
1.Take a notepad and go room by room through your house. Make a note of those places that really come out and grab you with their hallmark visual chaos. Frequent culprits include the bedroom dresser, desk tops, kitchen counters and bathroom vanities. The garage is almost a given, but we'll get to that later. Pencil in a couple of hours to tackle each messy spot and then follow up. You might be surprised at how satisfying it can be to complete each task.
2.As you begin your 'control clutter' campaign, it's important to keep in mind that sorting is the key to mastering a mess. For example, your bedroom dresser top holds a flower vase, your jewelry box, your brush, comb and hand mirror, a lamp and some family photos. At least, these were the items you put there when you first moved in. Now, what else do you find there? Keys, grocery receipts, that bill you've been looking everywhere for, loose change and perhaps an empty candy wrapper. Now, that's real life. What to do?
3.Get your trash basket and set it beside the dresser. Everything you don't need goes in there. If you save loose change, find an attractive little basket as the designated receptacle for your change. If you're accustomed to storing your keys on the dresser, put it on top of the loose change. Every day when you come home, put today's change in the basket and toss the keys on top. Easy to find. The orderly, neat look imparts a more peaceful feeling to the room and makes dusting a heck of a lot easier. Go pay or file the bill!
4.Go room by room, humming the mantra, 'Control clutter for the rest of my life...'. Sort, sort, sort! When you find yourself tempted to just drop some item wherever you're standing, remind yourself that you're just creating more work for yourself. It doesn't take but a minute to put the darn thing where it belongs.
This is the easy method to controlling clutter. It's all a matter of changing a few habits. When temptation knocks, just remember how upset you were when you were late for work just because you couldn't remember where you put your keys the night before.
When you've learned to control clutter in your home and work areas, that's when you go for the garage. You'll have acquired the necessary practice to do that job!
