If you own a home that is not hooked up

If you own a home that is not hooked up to your community sewer system, you have a bit of upkeep to worry about. This is not often something new homeowners are aware of or think about when they buy a new home.
Septic systems are usually near the home and underground, and most dont even give them a thought until there is a problem and then they have to think about it. By then, the problems are usually going to be expensive to clear up.

There are companies that come to clear out septic systems. They can do this once or twice a year, depending on the size of the systems. Smaller ones obviously need more attention, and will need to be emptied more often. Larger ones can hold more, but when there might be a problem, they are harder and more costly to clean up.

Before you can find out the state of your system, you have to find it. Sometimes, it is clear where it is because you can see the cover. However, many are buried for various reasons, and that means you might not be sure where it might be. Look for areas in your lawn where the grass might be a bit greener, or that might tend to be soggy when the rest of it is dry. Those are great starting points for your search.

Most arent aware there are easy things they can do to take care of their septic systems. There are some products on the market that are meant to be flushed into the system to take care of some things that can be problematic over time. Some contain bacteria that can eat away at some of the things within septic systems to keep things down to a manageable level. This wont mean the systems wont need to be emptied on occasion, but it might stop an accidental overflow between scheduled clean up times.

When there is a problem with septic systems, it is going to be very clear what is going on. Most of the time, the sewage is going to leak up into the lawn, and the smell might be the first thing that someone notices. Depending on the size of the problem, you may have to pay a lot to have someone come right out and take care of the problem. If you are inheriting septic systems for the first time, have someone have a look before you move into your home so you know if you need to have something done right away, and to also gauge the shape of the system and if they think you might need some sort of upgrade.
