Getting a Total Body Workout

Some people believe that spot training can help when they have a few stubborn pounds around the midsection or if they do not like the way their upper arms look. Spot training can be good to tone an area, but it does not remove fat from that area. In order to do that, you have to eat a sensible diet and you have to have a total body workout. You feel better all over when you combine some weight resistance and cardiovascular activity for the best overall results. There are many ways that you can get a total body workout. The important thing is to find what you like to do and then keep at it. If you choose a type of activity that you find boring, or that aggravates a part of your body (like your back or your knees) you are not going to stick with it and thus it can not help you. Instead, find out what your options are and choose something that sounds like fun, something that you can sink your teeth into, and something that is practical for your way of life.

One way to get a total body workout is to go into light weight lifting. You don't have to bulk up to benefit from weight lifting, and unless you go out of your way to do so, you won't bulk at all. You will just tone and slim your body. You can find great workout with just one home machine that can target all important muscle groups on your body. You can also find the same machine at your local gym in most cases. It can pay off to hire a personal trainer for just a few sessions so that they can construct a total body workout that you can do on your own. That is what they are there for.

Once you have some type of workout for the whole body, you can then find some time to add cardio to that workout. This may mean some time on the treadmill a few times a week, or every day if you can manage it, or something like taking a brisk walk each day. If you don't like to walk alone, find a walking buddy, or better yet, get a dog. If you don't want a dog, ask someone you know who has a dog if they would mind if you walked them once a day. Most people will be glad to let you do it, as dogs need exercise too, and owners don't always have the time to walk them as they wish they could.

One thing that you may want to consider is that a total body workout may mean working out your mind as well. One roadblock to success in dieting and improving the body overall is the internal workings of the mind. If you are an over eater and can't stop, see if therapy can help you understand why you do it. If a lack of motivation is the problem, even though you have the time for your workouts, there may be a reason behind it that you don't understand. Mental focus and understand can greatly improve your odds of adopting a healthier lifestyle and can help you stick with it.
