The Xperia Play - A Sony Ericsson Cell Phone that Tries to Reinvent the Game

When in 2007 Steve Jobs presented the first iPhone at the Apple conference, the introduction speech included a word about how Apple had reinvented the phone. People at the time thought that it was typical marketing bombast. No one realized at the time how literally true it was. Fast forward to four years later, and just about every smart phone on the market looks exactly like the iPhone - a slab of black featureless glass. How is any phone company supposed to set itself apart in a market like this where all everyone wants is a large touchscreen, and every phone has no choice but to make use of more or less the same processors, operating systems and memory? Apple, of course, has the iPod built into its phone. What is a Sony Ericsson cell phone to do? Build a Walkman into its phones? That's already been done to no great advantage to the company.

At the Mobile World Congress, phone makers like Sony Ericsson and HTC, hoping to set themselves apart with smartphone designs that do new things, have 3-D, social networking and gaming as their areas of focus. Sony has a name in gaming like no other phone maker out there. They are to gaming what Apple is to music. In the latest high-profile Sony Ericsson cell phone release they have, Sony's gaming heritage comes through - in the form of the exciting new concept of the Xperia Play Android smartphone. There's a lot about this phone that makes it look like one of those PlayStation portable gaming devices. Looked at face on, it looks like any other slab-of-glass smartphone. Slide the panel below the display out, you see that it's a traditional gaming controller pad. It's meant to bring gaming to smart phones in a way that mere touchscreens could never handle adequately.

The Xperia Play Sony Ericsson cell phone will certainly have its task cut out for it. Apparently, there are plenty of other manufacturers that are really tired of having to play the iPhone's game of turning out glass-tablet smart phones. The new LG smartphone for instance, has an autostereoscopic screen - it lets you watch 3-D without glasses. INQ, the British maker of smartphones, is making Android-based phones that are all about Facebook and nothing else.

The smartphone segment is all but four years old. And already, more people get on the Internet through their smartphones than they do through a computer. It's a very stressful time for makers of phones. It's back to the drawing board for everyone.
