Toddler Bed Rails

Going from the crib to the toddler bed is a big step both for you and for your baby. It can be sad because you baby is simply not a baby any longer, but you do have a lot of fun and amazing moments with your child coming up. For your baby, the switch can be a happy one, or it can be one that causes them some unrest. You should know when it is time to make the switch, and also how to keep your toddler safe if they have a habit of rolling around in their bed a lot. Toddler bed rails are a must for most families, at least for a little while.

We are more aware of where we are when we sleep than we realize. If we were not, we would all fall out of bed all the time and we would all need something like toddler bed rails on our beds. This is not something that kicks in right away, hence the need for the crib and the rails that most toddlers use when the make the big change. A baby and toddler will roll around a lot, though not all do, and they can easily roll right out of bed time and time again until they are more self aware while sleeping. Think of the rails as a safety barrier between your child and the hard floor.

It is usually time to go to the toddler bed when your crib is down to the lowest possible level and your child is still trying to climb out of it. If they were to go head first over the side of the crib, they could be seriously injured. If the crib is simply not enough to contain them, you have to move to the toddler bed rails instead of the crib for safety. They will get in and out of bed on their own, but the rails will stop rolling out while they are sleeping. They won't fall out while awake because they can simply get out. Once they climb, the time has come.

When installing the toddler bed rails, make sure you get some that do not go the entire length of the bed or you are going to have the same problem. If your child wants to get out, they will. They will do so by climbing over the rail and falling. The rail is not meant to keep them in the bed while awake, only to keep them in it while they are sleeping. These should be long enough to help them sleep safely, but they should also leave enough space for your child to climb in and out of bed safely when they wake up or when it is time to go to bed.

Today's toddler bed rails are much better than they were in the past. You don't have to settle for the same white, metal rails you may have had when you were a kid. You can find rails of all colors and all materials that may match the toddler bed that you got them. Some beds come with sides that are a bit higher that work like rails, but allow your child to get in and out easily. If you can't find rails you like, consider this type of bed as an alternative.
