Smythe is currently the chairman of surgery at the Texas A and M Health Science Center College of Medicine, and also chairman of the department of surgery at Scott and White Memorial Hospital. Dr. William Smythe holds the Glen and Rita K. Roney endowed chair in surgery and is a professor of cellular and molecular medicine for the medical school.

He is certified by both the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and he has received a number of awards.
