The clothing outlets first made their debut back in the 1980s, mainly concentrated in large metro areas, beginning on the East coast and quickly migrating to locations on the West coast. At first, the average consumer was not aware of the huge purchasing advantages afforded by these clothing outlets. Instead, the mainly women patrons consisted of women who could well afford a plenteous wardrobe, but chose to use the clothing outlets to double their wardrobe with designer clothes, handbags, shoes and accessories offered at twice the price of the upscale, 5th Avenue department stores. Hey, why not?
It didn't take long for word of these heavily discounted, quality wardrobe finds to spread. One neighbor told another. Would you believe I got this wool designer coat for $150?! I saw the exact same coat at Nieman Marcus last week for $350! That's inspiring talk for any woman.
At that time, most of the clothing outlets were in huge, department store sized buildings and carried every type of garment and accessory you'd need. Not only that, but other popular home items, like bedding and linens were part of the stock. While these stores did away with the normal decorative frills shiny display cases, plush carpeting and fancy window displays, they had the goods! What woman could resist snapping up a designer dress or suit and a couple of handbags at such prices? So what was the catch? No catch at all, unless you couldn't deal with the lack of store trimmings, external glitz and the lack of a sales person offering you personal attention.
Women discovered that these clothing outlets also had men's departments, with suits, dress and casual shirts, ties, sweaters, belts and shoes. They could outfit their man with the same designer labels and quality clothing items they'd been paying substantially more to obtain at the famous department stores, for years, until shopping the outlet stores.
After several years, other retail shop owners decided this was a good business to get in to, with massive appeal and a terrific following of ready made customers. This began the proliferation of smaller factory outlet shops all over the country. Some specialize in sports wear, accessories, linens or designer clothing for women or men. These shops began sprouting up in strip mall locations on the outskirts of their Main Street competition. It soon became apparent that this business model was a recipe for success.
Shopping the clothing outlets is now a popular Saturday afternoon activity for discount minded shoppers. Women love a bargain, no matter what the economy is doing, but now, it's even more pleasurable when you can make your clothes budget work in style.
If you haven't yet made an excursion to one of these clothing outlet malls, it's about time you did! You'll find everything from children's clothing and shoes to luggage. I've yet to meet anyone who's not up for saving money on a big scale on name brand purchases.
