1. Performance. Computers are sort of like cars; they're not all built the same. That junky 2-door coupe doesn't have the same hauling capacity as a 4 wheel drive truck. So, when you are buying a computer, consider what you're using it for. Mostly word processing and spreadsheets and some internet applications? You don't need the same performance as a 3-D graphics or complicated gaming. Don't get a computer that has more performance than you need. Don't buy a Porsche when you only need a Honda.

2. Portability. The age old question when buying a computer: notebook or desktop? There's a couple of things to consider here when buying a computer. Do you really need to take the computer around with you? Most people with laptops only use it in one area anyway. Desktops also tend to be cheaper and you'll get more bang for your buck with a desktop. Often overlooked when buying a computer is the future - many laptops have a shorter shelf life and no laptops can be upgraded. You can replace cards and add features and functionality to desktops much easier than you can with notebook computers.

3. Operating System. This is perhaps the most over-hyped debate when buying a computer. Mac or PC? In the end, it really doesn't matter. Nearly all of the most used applications such as Microsoft Office or iTunes are available on either PC or Mac operating systems. If anything, Apple computers are slightly better performers, but usually more expensive. Also, in America, PC is still relatively standard in the workplace. So you might have a comfort factor with PCs, but Macs work in nearly identical ways. Again, the difference between them is smaller than you think.

So when buying a computer, remember these three things: performance, portability and the operating system. The decision of buying a computer is a big one, but it doesn't need to be hard.
