It was not exactly the best time to buy a new car. I was paying off student loans, you see, and I had just started my new job. Although it promised to be a lucrative career, the first-year salary was not very good and the car payments would be expensive. Nonetheless, I needed to buy a new car right then. You see, my old car was on its last wheels. It was barely drivable, and it was destined to break down on the road any time now. I knew that if I waited until my old car failed, I would be extremely inconvenienced by the experience.
When buying a new or used car, there is only so much research that you can do. Of course, you can look up almost every statistic there is in the consumer reports car guide, the blue book, or some other source on car information. Nonetheless, eventually it just comes down to gut feelings and the knowledge that you have. You can't buy a new car based on statistics alone. At some point, your own tastes are going to come into play. If you are honest with yourself and buy a new car based on your own likes and dislikes, you will probably be happier with your purchase.
In the end, buying a new car was not as traumatic of an experience as I had thought. I bought a new Honda, and I was very happy with it from the first day that I got it. My decision to buy a new car was informed by my experiences driving an old one. If I hadn't driven so many used Hondas and seen how reliable they were, I might have chosen a different car. I figured that I would stick with what had always worked for me, and chose a Honda.
