Kid Digital Camera for the Young Photographer

My young son absolutely loves taking pictures. One of his favorite activities is to take candid snapshots of family members as we lounge around the house or go about doing our chores. The only problem is we have one of those expensive Nikon SLR cameras that cost several hundred dollars, and don't exactly trust it in the hands of a five-year-old. We allow him to use the Nikon with adult supervision only, which obviously puts a bit of a damper on his enthusiasm. Perhaps the time is right to buy my son a kid digital camera that he can use on his own.

A kid digital camera is different from a standard one in a couple of significant ways. First of all, a kid digital camera usually comes with some kind of tough outer shell made of either hard plastic or some kind of silicone rubber. This makes the device extremely durable and gives it the ability to withstand drops and other accidents that are bound to happen while in the hands of typical youngsters.

Second, a kid digital camera is usually bigger than standard cameras. It comes with bigger controls and buttons, as well as a bigger viewfinder. This makes the gadget easier for small children to operate. Young photographers' little fingers and lack of total coordination can make operating adult-size cameras a difficult task. The big buttons and wider spacing between controls on a kid digital camera takes care of these problems and ensures smoother operation.

I've been checking out a few different cameras for kids online and have been reading reviews from other parents that have bought these products. While most parents report that their children love the cameras, there is one major caveat to consider. The quality of photographs produced by a kid digital camera is not going to be anywhere near the same as what you'd get from a "real" one. Remember, a kid digital camera is basically one or two steps up from a toy, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that photographs lack light, clarity, focus, or sharpness. If you go in expecting one of these things to produce high-quality, printable pictures, you'll probably be severely disappointed with the results.

Nevertheless, kids' cameras can be a wonderful way for would-be shutterbugs to practice important skills such as framing their subjects and keeping their hands steady until the photograph is taken. The cameras are fun for children, and parents don't have to worry about their little ones damaging expensive electronic equipment.

If you've got a budding photographer in your family like I do, then maybe a kid digital camera is just what you need. Check out the different types available in stores or online, and buy one today. Then you and your child can experience the joys of photography together!
