Copyright Images

Of all of the serious mistakes that inexperienced artists sometimes make, failing to copyright images is one of the most tragic and frequent ones. For whatever reason, fewer people copyright photos than should. Some of them are just so happy to get people looking at the pictures that they don't consider the chances of someone stealing them. Other ones have ideological beliefs, choosing to spread copyright free images in the hopes of reforming intellectual property practices. Whatever the reason, people who forget to copyright photos usually regretted it in the long term. It is cheap and easy to copyright image, and it protects the art that you have worked so hard on.

I had a friend who made all of his images free online. He was your typical freedom of information guy, believing that intellectual property was wrong. He was always happy when he would see his images used in a website, but he never considered how he would feel if they were out and out stolen. Because he failed to copyright images, a graphic design company stole several of his pictures, modify them slightly, and took credit for them as their own. Although he didn't mind when people used his images, he hated losing credit for them. It really crushed him and, to this day, he is not as involved in the art world as he used to be because of it.

A lot of people think that is difficult to copyright an image. Copyrighting, however, is not like patenting. If you want to get a trademark patent, you have to ensure that nothing like what you have made has been patented before. You probably will have to hire a lawyer, and the whole process will take quite a bit of time and money. By comparison, it is easy to copyright images. The whole process is designed so that people can copyright music, images, and literature in large quantities with little work. After all, that is what artists need to do!

A lot of people worry that their copyright images will not be available for other people to use. So many artists distribute images in the hopes of getting well-known, and they figure that if other people are not free to repost their stuff, no one will discover it. In reality, this fear is misguided. People can get permission from you to use your copyrighted images by writing to you. You can even give the public the permission to use your pictures as long as they give you credit. That way, they can spread your images, but can't claim them as their own.
