One of the more memorable stories came from a couple that wanted a little girl. They already had three boys, but the mother had always wanted a girl and thought that it was just not going to happen for her and her husband. The woman looked into adoption of children in foreign countries, and liked what she read about an orphanage in Russia.
She and her husband made a 19-hour trip to Moscow, and then on to a tiny village to pick up their daughter. It was not easy, though. When she got to the orphanage, there was some kind of a hold-up and she and her husband were told that she would not be able to get their daughter at that time. She asked how much longer it would be, and was told at least two weeks.
The woman and her husband had not planned on staying that long, time-wise or financially, but both really wanted to adopt the girl. They waited for the two weeks for all of the paperwork to be figured out and were then told that the orphanage was not sure if they were going to be able to let the girl go, because she still had a living relative and by law he had to be contacted before she was adopted out. The problem was, nobody knew where he was.
The reason I love to hear about adoption of children is because of stories like this. The couple had very strong faith, and they prayed every night that it would work out. After almost a full month of being abroad and with little money left, they finally got word that the little girl had been cleared to go home with them.
I was at the airport when they arrived, and they looked so tired and weary, but at the same time, an indescribable joy permeated both of their faces as they walked off the plane with their new daughter. She was absolutely adorable, and I immediately understood why they decided to wait for her.
I have written many stories on adoption of children, and they all have meant a lot to me, because there is such a personal dimension to them. These are young people that were not wanted and in most cases felt unloved, and in time learned that nothing could be farther from the truth. Those stories always make me feel good and they are always a lot of fun to write.
