Covering Cover Music

What is cover music? Its when a musician performs or reinterprets another musicians work. When a musician does so, they are said to be covering music. Covers can range from straight out performing someone elses song the way it is to completely changing its style and almost making it into another song entirely. There are a variety of reasons why musicians may perform cover music. Sometimes it is a form of tribute and respect. Legendary bands often have their songs covered as a testament to their influence in the musical world. The music industry is a creative community and artists often listen to each others work. Covering another musicians song can be a way of saying, Hey, I think your song is cool and I want to perform it. In other instances it can be a test of a musicians skill or just for fun: How can I make this rock song sound like a mellow ballad? And sometimes, it can be a form of criticism: I dont think your song is so great and I think I could do a better job. But overall, covering is usually a compliment. Isnt imitation (or perhaps reinterpretation) the sincerest form of flattery?

Performing cover music may present advantages and disadvantages to a musician, particularly to musicians who are looking to break into the industry and make it big. Musicians that have already made a name for themselves already have a developed, recognized style so performing covers doesnt have as much of an impact for them. However, little known musicians may often start out by performing covers because these are songs that are already well-known and people will recognize and pay attention to them. This is why many musicians starting out on youtube will post videos of covers. Viewers will see familiar Top 40s songs on acoustic guitar and think its neat. Then, when a youtube musician has developed a significant following, they may post their own original material along with their covers. Then they can start becoming famous in their own right. However, cover music can create a pitfall for musicians whose covers overshadow their own work. Some artists dont have a problem with this and in fact build careers off of covering other artists, but for musicians that are looking to be recognized as original performers, this can be an issue.

So its really up to the musician and what they hope to achieve. Cover music can initially be a bit of a crutch, but it can also be a great way to introduce ones work to the listening public. Depending on what kind of image you want to build as artist or what kind of music you want to perform, you can use covers to your advantage or not.
