How to Fight Cruelty to Animals

There are few things more depressing and tragic than the amount of cruelty to animals that exists in this country. Animals are helpless and innocent creatures and still some people think that they don't deserve humane treatment. But it takes more than feeling bad about cruelty to animals to stop cruelty to animals. Here are some things that you can do to help stop cruelty to animals.

Volunteer at your local animal shelter. The easiest way to let a problem like cruelty to animals continue is to not get involved. If you don't get involved, who will? You know the old saying, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Animal shelters are frequently overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals to attend and are always looking for people to volunteer their time - just a couple of hours a week can make a huge difference.

Know the animal cruelty laws in your area. Not every state or county has the same rules when it comes to cruelty to animals. Know what the laws are and be aware. And if you think the laws aren't good enough, help pass better ones! That's the joy of being in a democracy, finding a worthy cause like fighting cruelty to animals and using your voice to make better laws. Join the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), as they fight for tougher legislation against animal abusers.

Know the signs of animal abuse and be aware. While there are numerous organizations like the ASPCA, the majority of cruelty to animals goes unnoticed. Why? People look the other way, or miss seemingly obvious signs of cruelty to animals. Check for malnourished and bone-thin pets. Are they missing patches of hair? Are there signs of physical abuse? Does the animal appear to be in pain? Contact your local ASPCA. They can't do the work unless we tell them where to go. And when you do report violations or abuse, make sure to include as much information as possible. The more information you give, the better chances that animal advocacy groups can make a difference.

Finally, make sure you set a good example, both for your community and for children. Too many children aren't probably instructed about the dangers of pet abuse. What you show your children, they will imitate. If you set an example of providing proper care and treatment of animals, the cycle of cruelty to animals might someday be broken.
