So when my wife became pregnant with our first kid, I wasn't worrying about the usual things, but about picking out a baby name. We didn't know if it was a baby boy or a baby girl we didn't want to but we knew that we had to be prepared. At first, we went to look an unusual baby names. We thought up names like Penelope and Winfred. You see, Both of us have dreadfully ordinary names. Are there so few Davids in the world that my parents had to make me another one? We thought that, rather than going with the top baby names, we would give the kid a chance to have an interesting title in his or her life.
Soon however we began to have second thoughts about it. Maybe the top baby names weren't a bad idea. Having one of of the top baby boy names, I never had to feel odd or unusual. As a very individualistic person, of course, I cultivated my own outsider identity, but I had the option not to. If you don't have a top baby name, however, you never have that option. You will always be viewed as weird by your peers, and you might resent your parents because of it. The more I thought about it, the more the top baby names seemed to make sense. I didn't want to make up my child's decision for him or her about how to live. I wanted her to have one of the top ten baby girl names (if the kid was a her) so that she could fit in or rebel as she saw fit.
Unfortunately, none of the top baby names were appealing to me. My wife didn't like any of them either. Finally, we decided that the best thing to do would be to wait. The top baby names book was providing no inspiration, and we figured that, when it was finally time for my wife to give birth, some name or other would strike us as right.
