Easy Xbox Repair Guide

Are you plagued by the Red Ring Of Death? This horrible affliction is estimated to affect almost a third of Xbox 360 owners, putting their beloved video game systems out of action forever. If the machine is still under warranty, a simple call to Microsoft will get it fixed. But if your warranty is expired (or you never got one), you could be in for a very sad time. Unless you read this Xbox repair guide, that is. I will give you the information you need to fix your Xbox in your own home with simple tools and banish the Red Ring forevermore.

The first step in any console repair project is to check and clean your A/V and power connections. Power down and unplug everything from the console, clean all connections with rubbing alcohol, wait 30 minutes and reassemble the system. This can sometimes resolve minor complaints, and is always worth trying.

If that doesnt succeed, step two of the Xbox repair guide is to open up your box. Unplug everything and clear a large, safe work area. Peel the stickers from around the screw areas and use a Torx 10 driver to unscrew the case screws. Remove the faceplate first and follow up with the tabs holding the top and bottom vent plates in place. Work the additional plates off by releasing the clips that hold them in place until the metal core of the machine is exposed. Use the Torx driver to take the six screws from the bottom of the unit that hold it together and youre in.

Step three of my Xbox repair guide is to get at the GPU, the source of the Red Ring Of Death. Youll need to pull out the fan shroud, the fan and the motherboard to get at the faulty part. Once its exposed, youll be able to see the faulty X-clamp that separates the heatsinks from the GPU unit. The mission here is to replace the weak screws that hold the pair together with slightly thicker, more durable screws. Enlarge the holes in the casing, add a few washers to the new screws, and put the unit back together.

The final step of my easy Xbox repair guide is to power the unit up again, but remove the fan from its usual location. You want to run the GPU for ten, fifteen minutes, until it reaches maximum heat. Once it does, replace the fan, close the box, and reboot the machine. If all goes well, your Xbox 360 should be up and running like new!
