In the worst instances, they can ruin the dramatic effect of a scene by spelling out all of the dialogue before it even comes out of the actors mouth. Sometimes they create confusion and annoyance, albeit unintentionally. However, viewers may depend on them to fully appreciate a film. In the end, captions remain an optional feature of DVD viewing, and you can always choose whether or not to include them. Perhaps the real question is whether caption-hating viewers can choose to ignore them while watching with pro-caption colleagues, or whether the latter can manage without them. After all, movie watching is a largely social experience, and even better than a good movie is good company.
