Hana Hawaii, the tropical paradise

Hana Hawaii is probably the image that pops into your head when you think of a tropical paradise. It's located at the eastern edge of Maui, has a population of less than 1000 people and is far enough off the beaten path that you really have to look hard to find it.

What's great about Hana Hawaii is that it combines all the things that you love about Hawaii - fishing, swimming, sunshine, local cuisine, surfing, hiking, adventure sports, and on and on and on - without the crowds of other Hawaiian vacation spots. Hana is pretty much only reached by the Hana highway, and it's far enough from the rest of the state to be its own hidden little gem.

One of the best sites in Hana Hawaii is Haleakala National Park, a national park since 1961. Like many other national parks in Hawaii, Haleakala features a volcano of the same name. It's been dormant since 1790, so tours are welcomed and, obviously, encouraged. In the vocano's crater you'll see a biosphere unique to the area, unlike any other biosphere in the US or abroad. It attracts over one million visitors annually, though, so be sure you're prepared for some crowding.

Still, even at its height Hana Hawaii won't be as crowded as Oahu or the other parts of Maui. Its remote location allows you to vacation in style, taking your leave of the mundanities of day-to-day living and enjoying the beach, the surf and the sun.

Another site you'll want to check out is the Kahanu Garden, which is part of the National Tropical Botanic Garden, a non-profit group dedicated to the preservation and presentation of native botany in Hawaii. Hana Hawaii is ideally suited to this goal, as its lack of mainstream exploitation and congestion has allowed the area to hold more tightly to its natural features, flora and fauna. Of particular note are the hala forests, the last undisturbed such in the state.

If plants aren't your thing, you can also check out the Pi'ilanihale Heiau. It's a monumental ancient temple that is thought to be the largest ancient temple in polynesia. Located in the center of the Kahanu Garden, it is one of the "must-sees" of any trip to Hana Hawaii. It dates back to the 16th century AD, and is registered as a national historic monument.

So enjoy your Hana Hawaii vacation, take in the sights and relax.
