Is the Hal Leonard Guitar Method worth it?

If you've ever picked up a guitar you probably know about the Hal Leonard guitar method. Maybe you're not one-hundred percent familiar with it, but you know that it's advertised as an easy, effective way to learn the instrument without getting bored or taking short-cuts.

One way of looking at it is that the hal leonard guitar method is like making a cake from a package. The ingredients are all already there, all you have to do is add water and stir. In this way you don't make a unique or noteworthy cake, but it is still a cake that you've made and, really, isn't that the point?

Serious musicians would probably argue that it's not. The Hal Leonard guitar method has sold roughly eleventy-twelve billion copies over the past few decades, and if you belive the real virtuousos, you can tell a Hal Leonard guitar method devotee after about 10 seconds of music. Much like someone with a refined palatte can tell the difference between a cake made from scratch and one made from the pre-packaged pouch mentioned above.

How can they tell a Hal Leonard guitar method guitarist from one who learned the instrument through other means? Honestly, I'm not enough of a musician myself to know. Some would say there's a certain rigidness. Others say that it's all in the solos and fills, which usually follow predictable ingrained patterns. Still others say it's physical; the position of the hands on the fretboards and the way the guitarist gets into their phrases.

It's an interesting problem, then. If you want to learn the guitar, this is an easy and effective way to do so. And there's nothing in the Hal Leonard guitar method that precludes you from gaining total mastery over the instrument and expressing yourself musically.

The question is, will it make that mastery and overtness of expression more difficult to dig out of yourself? What's the use of learning the basics quickly if that technique is then more likely to make it more difficult to learn the expert techniques you want to employ?

It's a tricky situation, and one that requires you to be sure of the direction you want to go. Just looking to pick up a new hobby and enjoy plucking out some of your favorite songs on the way? The Hal Leonard guitar method is probably for you.

If, however, you want to become the next BB King or Jack White, you should probably look elsewhere. There are other ways to become a guitar master, ones that are less likely to turn you into a cookie-cutter guitarist.
